JFNA Supporting Holocaust Survivors in Their Old Age

Joshua “Josh” Weisfeld is an asset manager at W Brothers Realty, LLC in New York. Supportive of Jewish organizations and their causes, Joshua Weisfeld is a member of the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA).

JFNA provides support and care to Jewish people in need. It runs one of the most enduring social services programs in the country and provides funding for the care providers working with homebound seniors and people with disabilities as well as counselors working with troubled families. In particular, the organization facilitates care for tens of thousands of Holocaust survivors, who are seniors and living in poverty. JFNA funds their housing, health care, nutrition, and transportation, making their last years comfortable.

One of the beneficiaries of JFNA's services is Theodore “Teddy” Halpern. Born with clubbed feet and stunted arms with missing fingers, Teddy credits his disabilities for helping him survive the Holocaust and serving in the French Underground without detection by the Nazis. He was a courier for the French, sending messages and facilitating communication. Because of his disabilities, the Nazis never suspected him.

Today, Teddy lives in a JFNA hosting facility. The facility’s staff helps him with day-to-day tasks he has trouble doing such as showering. They also provide him with adequate nutrition. Teddy enjoys the various activities he participates in at the facility like day trips and learning interactions with school groups. He also loves the fact that the facility is located near his family so he can see his son’s family weekly.
